Sankofa Book Club

The word Sankofa, a West African word, which means, “return and retrieve it”, has become synonymous with inner-healings for people of all ilks around the world. Halle Gerima’s 1993 movie by the same name generated a series of conversations in relationship to a real depiction of the psychological aspects of chattel slavery. In response to a gap in critical thinking amongst primary urban youth Kimya Moyo of Cincinnati, Ohio began the Sankofa Education Enrichment Program. Kimya, former National Council of Negro Women Teacher of the Year, Enrichment program seeks to equip, enrich, and empower students with the mental tenacity to think through complex problems. Certified as a Master Teacher, this Math teacher for over 30 years provides over 20 high school students annually with the space to critically discuss popular culture as well as  makes a bi-annual voyage to the country of Ghana to encourage them to Sankofa on their own.

It is in this spirit of healing that we present to you the Sankofa Book Club. Each month we will request a biography reflecting on the life of some of the world’s leading pioneers of yesterday and today. From there the Global Talk message board will facilitate conversation on thought-provoking questions of the week, provide opportunity for unique polling, and we will end the month with a live conversation in the hopes of creating a space for looking closely at the ethics of identity. For those wishing to contribute to the Sankofa Saturday School or you would like assistance in starting a school of your own, please visit the website at:www.sankofaenrichment.org today!
