Dreaming With Audacity: Motivating Meditations for the Millennium Minded (April 2009)

I am honored, indeed blessed to be asked to participate in the project, Dreaming With Audacity.  Rev. Matthews is uniquely qualified to produce this work, in such a time as ours.  This project, which is interdisciplinary in nature, is well conceptualized, being soundly based on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Dreaming With Audacity illustrates how the international ecumenical movement is impacting Peter’s thought and activities during the life of King and now Obama.  This is done with great detail and care.  The acceptance and ascendancy of Barack Obama nationally and even internationally reflect a groaning among many in the world for new vision, new approaches to the deepening problems of poverty, intergroup conflict, financial crisis, political and social instability, and the like.  People groan for a new generation of leaders -- coalition builders, ethical servant-leaders who dare to walk according to different paradigms.  Indeed, we are all part of King’s (and now Peter’s) rapidly growing global congregation.  Not only does Dreaming With Audacity elucidate the recent past, it is a reminder of the work to be done, a call to action for the global community.

Peter Matthews has found new words to make fresh the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the advent of the dawning of a new generation of global leadership. With the events of 2008, including the election of the first African American as President of the United States, this is a wonderful time to again take a look at the life of the twentieth century leader of the Civil Rights Movement within the lens of our respective souls and spirits. These powerful writings and reflections more than provide us all with that prophetic look.

Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry,

The African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) (Jacksonville, Mississippi)

“Matthews writing is a fresh lens through which to see the King (and now Obama) era and today’s religious, ideological, and cultural conflict simultaneously. Peter refocuses our attention on potential answers at a time of tumult in today’s markets, marketplaces, and marketplaces of ideas. His writing is a guidepost for an updated and contemporary approach to conflict resolution, understanding, respect, and cooperation in tough economic and cultural times for the planet.”

It is a privilege in this particular time in history to recommend this work entitled Dreaming With Audacity While the people everywhere are inspired by the prospects of having a young man of African American origin to lead the superpower of the United States of America, while the world renews its commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and while the overarching principle for equity in health is stressed again, it is very timely that through the reflections of Peter Matthews we are reminded of the battles past and of the need to have "a vision that seeks to unite humanity". Peter Matthews, through his own deep commitment, apparent not only in this work but in his teachings in Geneva and around the world, has captured the spirit of excitement that Martin Luther King and Barack Hussein Obama transmit to all of us who were lucky to live be alive then and now.

"A well conceived work on Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Hussein Obama. Both men who were able to leverage their global status in an attempt to both widen and deepen international reflection and praxis on issues of war, poverty, and race. King speaking to it directly, made him both heroic and courageous. Obama, attempting to articulate those same core ideals, in his 2008 attempt of forging an even newer paradigm for global reconciliation.  In Dreaming with Audacity Peter Edward Matthews offers that same type of courage we need today. An interpersonal courage the world will be in needed of if we each are going to "offer up our bodies as living sacrifices" and change the world in which we live. A must for serious discourses on leadership, justice and, for those of who seek the courage, to be!!

" Rev. Peter Edward Matthews has the intelligence, energy, moral core, and charisma to be a dynamic leader for his generation. So it is fitting that Peter offer his provocative Insights on his two of his own personal source of inspiration, Dr. Martin Luther King and Barack Hussein Obama. Peter promises to share the very struggles, depths of faith, and remarkable wisdom of our own "American Gandhi” couched with in the global ascendancy of our first African American President. Peter is a deft and thorough writer with great passion and knowledge. If you are serious about your desire to lead, Dreaming With Audacity is a must.
